intro
Welcome to the first June issue of LiDAR News. As you are reading this I am in Toronto, Canada attending the Optech Innovative LiDAR Solutions Conference, and making another pitch for adoption of the recently approved ASTM E57 data interoperability standard.
The featured video this week comes from the work done by CyArk to document the ancient city of Pompeii. CyArk is on a mission to laser scan the top 500 historic sites in the world.
Richard Rybka gets the Spotlight with his discussion of GeoBIM or what he prefers to call SIM - Site Information Management. Richard claims that mobile scanning can be used to support a new level of intelligent site design and management - I completely agree.
If you think that all you need to do is buy a mobile laser scanner and the rest will take care of itself better have a look at Stephen Clancy's article on The Complexities of an Urban Survey. Fred Persi follows up with his second article on the explosion of laser scanned data, this time with a look at the options for managing it.
As Michael Olsen points out we all should have a basic computer programming ability - I wish I had more. If you are struggling with moving large data files Joe Croser's article will offer some pain relief.
The Resource Directory listings are expanding. Take a few minutes to list your firm in our Resource Directory, and don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
Please let me know how we can be of service to you, and also please encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter HERE.
Best regards,

GeoBIM Advocacy
One of Gene Roe's recent "In the Scan" blog comments really hit home. He proposed the concept of GeoBIM - using BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology to manage civil infrastructure projects. I totally agree, but would like to add one additional thought. Instead of transposing the term "building" to areas outside of structural walls, I propose that we adopt a new acronym "SIM" - Site Information Management. Today, BIM is a very ...

New Articles for June, 2011 from the LiDAR News team...
Stephen
Clancy
Complexities of an Urban Survey: Stephen Clancy ? Recently we garnered some attention from the Charleston, WV press as well as LiDAR News regarding a project we are currently working on for the City. Although we are months away from completion, our Mobile LiDAR field activities are complete, so I find this an opportune time to provide a broad overview of the complexities ...
Fred Persi
Awash in Data (Part II): Fred Persi ? This article is the second in a series examining the rapid explosion of data brought on by widespread adoption of laser scanning. Part I looked at the reasons behind the data explosion, while this focuses on current and future methods for managing and working with large sets of data. Raw data from a scanning system is a collection of 3D ...
Olsen
Bin ?N? Grid: A simple program for statistical filtering of point cloud data: Michael Olsen ? This month I will discuss a simple statistical filter that can be used on LIDAR data to remove vegetation, noise, etc. We developed code to do this as a project for our DTM class at Oregon State. To run the program, you simply drag and drop a text file into the executable and follow the ...
Joe Croser
Lowering the Barriers to Streamline Scan-to-model Workflows: Joe Croser ? ?If you are not solving a problem you don?t have a business? ? at least that?s the general rule, although exceptions do apply. Perhaps it?s more fair to say, ?If someone doesn?t value your offering enough to pay money for it you don?t have a business.? That?s why at Pointools we focus entirely on solving ...

Topcon's IP- S2 Mobile Mapping System overcomes the challenges of mapping 3D features at a high level of accuracy. Accurate vehicle positions are obtained using three technologies: a dual frequency GNSS receiver establishes a geospatial position; an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides vehicle attitude; and connection to the vehicle CAN bus or external wheel encoders obtains odometry information.
