Meet the Authors /
Welcome to the end of June issue of LiDAR News. I received a number of compliments from
readers that I met with at the recent Optech Innovative LiDAR Solutions Conference, and Hexagon
2011. It is very gratifying to hear that the spirit of community is developing and that you are
finding real value in our offerings. I hope you had a chance to see our latest digital offering -
LiDAR Magazine. Check out
our charter edition if you
The featured video in this issue comes from CSIRO
(Australia?s Commonwealth Scientific and
Industrial Research Organization), who is involved with the development of a handheld scanning
system that combines a 2D laser scanner with an IMU and sophisticated software to rapidly
generate a 3D model.
Lewis Graham gets the spotlight with his discussion of the newly formed LiDAR division within
ASPRS ? the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. This is the first new ASPRS
division since 1986 when GIS was added. Congratulations to all involved for making this happen.
Even as an early adopter I have been a little skeptical of the rate of adoption of mobile
scanning ? I think the cost has a lot to do with that, but the more I learn I have to agree with
Richard Rybka that this is going to be a disruptive technology.
On a similar note, Jarlath O?Neil-Dunne paints a very interesting picture of the possible impact
of Microsoft and Google entering the LiDAR and orthophoto marketplace. Our final article from
Michael Raphael at Direct Dimensions highlights this firm?s extensive experience in scanning and
modeling aircraft where every surface detail counts.
The Resource Directory listings are expanding. Take a few minutes to list your firm
in our Resource Directory, and don't forget to send us your white papers
and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.

S2 Mobile Mapping System overcomes the challenges of mapping 3D features at a high level
of accuracy. Accurate vehicle positions are obtained using three technologies: a dual frequency
GNSS receiver establishes a geospatial position; an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides
vehicle attitude; and connection to the vehicle CAN bus or external wheel encoders obtains

ASPRS and the LIDAR Division
: Lewis Graham ? The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing
(ASPRS, www.asprs.org) formed a new LIDAR division during its annual conference in May. To be

Disruptive Technologies and
Disruptive Organizations: Jarlath O'Neil-Dunne ? There has been a lot
of talk about disruptive technologies in the tech media in the past two years, much of it
revolving around the iPhone/iPad and the impact such devices will have on PC sales. The term,
which was coined in the mid 90s, generally refers to an innovation that radically changes ...
Laser Scanning Aircraft for CFD
Analysis : Michael Raphael ? Last month?s contribution to LiDAR News
featured our use of 3D laser scanning technology on the original Wright Brothers 1903 airplane to
help NASA and other experts figure out how the Wright Bros. developed flight without the use of
modern day computers. See this link to review that article...
Why Mobile Mapping is
Disruptive Technology : Richard Rybka ? "Disruptive technology" is a term
used freely today in a world where innovation is cherished as the ultimate goal in product
development. It refers to events that occur when the innovative product or technology works its
way into the end-user mainstream, making significant changes to established markets and...
