intro
Welcome to the end of July issue of LiDAR News. I was not in the best spirit when I started writing this today. We are in the middle of major heat wave, but actually I promised my wife I was not going to complain about the heat after the winter we just had, so Life is Great.
The word I continue to receive from beta testers is that the LiDAR data processing tools and point cloud engine in ArcGIS 10.1 are going to impress. The other follow up issue from the Esri User Conference concerns Lightsquared. I have not spent much time on this topic as it is not directly related to LiDAR, but if you have a vested interest in GPS, as many of us do, I think you should make your voice heard about this very important issue.
Vol1No1 We continue to receive very positive response on our recently published premier edition of LiDAR Magazine. This is the first magazine to exclusively serve the LiDAR and laser scanning industries so be sure to have a look, and if you have an interesting story please let me know. Click to see it >>>
The featured video in this issue comes from a firm in the Netherlands. Cyclomedia has just finished development of a data fusion technology that they are calling Depth Cyclorama which uses LiDAR to georeference the pixels in their panoramic images - very impressive.
The Spotlight this time goes to John Caya and Mike Neuman from Mandli Communications with a detailed look at the statewide projects where they are using multiple, mobile data collection sensor systems. Articles this issue are by Stephen Clancy giving his clear explanation of the components of a Mobile Positioning System. Michael Olsen recaps his exciting visit to the Leica Geosystems factory in Heerbrugg, Switzerland - a place I hope to get to one day and Fred Persi provides his words of wisdom about scaling your laser scanning business - be careful.
The Resource Directory listings are expanding. Take a few minutes to list your firm in our Resource Directory, and don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
Please let me know how we can be of service to you, and also please encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter here.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

Olsen
A Visit to the Leica Geosystems Manufacturing Facility: Michael Olsen ? While presenting at the ISEC-6 conference in Zurich, Switzerland, my wife and I were invited to take a tour of the Leica Geosystems manufacturing facility in Heerbrugg, Switzerland. It was a very informative experience to be able to see the assembly of high precision survey instruments. While we did not ...
Fred Persi
Tackling Large Projects: From 10 to 10,000 scans: Fred Persi ? ?How do we expand into large projects?? This is a common question heard from providers of scanning services. Typically a firm has success in executing short projects lasting a week or so, and wants to tackle bigger projects of significantly longer duration. It would be nice if ramping up were a simple matter, but ...
Stephen
Clancy
Mobile Positioning Systems: Stephen Clancy ? In traditional Surveying and Mapping, points are determined by measuring the angle and distance to an object from an instrument positioned over a known location (X, Y, Z or elevation). By performing three-dimensional coordinate geometry (COGO), you are able to calculate the location and elevation of features that you ...

Topcon's IP- S2 Mobile Mapping System overcomes the challenges of mapping 3D features at a high level of accuracy. Accurate vehicle positions are obtained using three technologies: a dual frequency GNSS receiver establishes a geospatial position; an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides vehicle attitude; and connection to the vehicle CAN bus or external wheel encoders obtains odometry information.
