intro
Welcome to the end of August issue of LiDAR News. A business associate once told me that all of the real business in a calendar year gets done after Labor Day, in this case September 5th. It should certainly be a busy fall with InterGEO, Spar Europe and ELMF on the conference calendar. In addition, I will be providing a keynote speech at Digital Documentation 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland the week of September 19th.
We are busy working on the next edition of our digital LiDAR Magazine. We intend to publish in September and although we are all set for this issue content-wise, if you have an interesting story that you want to promote please let me know as I am looking for material for our November issue.
The featured video in this issue comes from Teccon Mobile Mapping. The creator took the time to insert labels that describe the type of data being used and the accuracy of the collection - very informative.
The Spotlight this time goes to Lewis Graham for his discussion of best practices involving airborne LiDAR data collection. This is the first in a series that leverages Lewis' extensive experience in this field.
Richard Rybka raises a red flag on the issue of privacy as it applies to mobile scanning - a must read. Michael Raphael explains how his firm was able to apply laser scanning to incredibly improve the life of an injured soldier. For the software engineers that read LiDAR News Michael Gerlek provides his insight on an open source library for working with LAS files.
The Resource Directory listings are expanding. Take a few minutes to list your firm in our Resource Directory, and don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
Please let me know how we can be of service to you, and also please encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter here.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

LIDAR Best Practices: Part 1 - Acquisition
In this next series of articles, I will move through some best practices for LIDAR data planning, collection and processing. While many of the techniques apply to both airborne and mobile, I will (at the request of the LIDAR News Editor) focus on airborne. The article is also very North American-centric with respect to positioning technology but it is easy to localize these processes (e.g. replace NGS with OSGB). Everyone, without exception, is very ...

Legislating Mobile Mapping : Richard Rybka ? In my last article, I mentioned a document issued by the Belgian Privacy Commission. This document outlines recommendations pertaining to planning and executing mobile mapping data collection. Here's the link in case you missed it: The scope of these recommendations includes mandatory registration of mobile mapping ...
Michael Raphael
3D Laser Scanning Helps Fix Injured Soldier Michael Raphael ? My submission this month tells the story of how 3D scanning technologies can impact and improve the life of a soldier injured in battle. Michael Fletcher came to our office in the summer of 2006 after significant medical treatment at both the Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Hospital ...
Gerlick
The libLAS Project : Michael Gerlek ? If you?re developing software for the lidar world, odds are good you?re going to need to work with the LAS file format at some point ? most commonly you?ll need to read in LAS files, and some of you will need to generate LAS outputs as well. This month I?d like to introduce you to the libLAS project [1], an open source library for reading, writing ...

Topcon's IP- S2 Mobile Mapping System overcomes the challenges of mapping 3D features at a high level of accuracy. Accurate vehicle positions are obtained using three technologies: a dual frequency GNSS receiver establishes a geospatial position; an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides vehicle attitude; and connection to the vehicle CAN bus or external wheel encoders obtains odometry information.
