intro
Welcome to the early September issue of LiDAR News. With the summer holidays in the rear view mirror it's now time to turn opportunity into closed business before year's end. With InterGEO, Spar Europe and ELMF on the calendar, it will be a busy Fall for conferences. In addition, your Editor will be providing a keynote speech at Digital Documentation 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland the week of September 19th. Hope to see some of you there.
The second edition of our digital LiDAR Magazine is in the works. We have an outstanding line up of articles, including a review of the US Army Buckeye sensor that is being flown in Iraq and Afghanistan, and from NOAA's Coastal Services Center a look at how they are supporting the use of LiDAR. If you have an interesting story please let me know as I am booking material for future issues.
The featured video in this issue comes from a young company, Floating Point FX. Their new Kratos visualization software appears to be amazingly powerful. They describe it as "All-in-One particle manipulation software." It's a must see.
The Spotlight this time goes to a guest author Arik Degani at Mabat 3D Technologies, based in Israel. Arik worked with Leica Geosystems and a local university to overcome numerous obstacles in creating a truly innovative education and business consortium. This should be a model for every community.
Evon Sylvia?contributing author Michael Olsen's grad student at Oregon State University?reports on a market research effort concerning level compensators. Joe Croser reports on a firm that reuses the point cloud data "as is," saving significant time and money. This is disruptive.
Joe Bima, Managing Director at Stellacore, is part of a team of new contributing authors who are going to focus their efforts on geomatic accuracy via a systems approach?a very important and timely topic area.
The Resource Directory listings are expanding. Take a few minutes to list your firm in our Resource Directory, and don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
Please let me know how we can be of service to you, and also please encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter here.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

3D laser scanning is not just one more new tool in surveying and geodesy, it is a new philosophy in geometry capture and processing, which requires a new strategy and approach. This technology and technique opens new horizons for surveyors: instead of doing the same things faster/further (and unfortunately cheaper), as some vendors wrongly recommend while promoting their products, surveyors should enhance and expand their services and ...

Sylvia
Survey of TLS Professionals: Evon Silvia ? As some of the long-standing LIDAR News readers may recall, the Oregon State University (OSU) geomatics program conducted a brief online survey of laser scanning professionals in September, 2010, both on Gene Roe?s blog and at Laser Scanning Forums UK. The survey was not designed to be rigorous, but rather to get a ...
Joe Croser
Eliminating Reverse Engineering from Scan-to-model Workflows: Joe Croser ? Very large point cloud models have for a long time died a slow death inside survey departments because the survey team wasn?t quick to share the data and because the data was largely unusable within mainstream CAD applications without first reverse-engineering the points to generate new ...
Bima
Meeting Demanding Accuracy Expectations Requires a Systems Approach: Joe Bima ? Have you noticed that the accuracy expectations for geospatial products seem to be on the increase? Whether it is for orthophotos, points clouds, surface/terrain models, as-builts, 3D city models from Satellite, Aerial or Terrestrial systems the market?s demand for greater accuracy ...
