intro
Welcome to the mid September issue of LiDAR News.
As you are reading this I will be providing a keynote speech at the Digital Documentation 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland. It should certainly be a fun learning experience and I will do my best to keep you informed. I hope to see some of you there. The other upcoming European conferences this fall include InterGEO, Spar Europe and ELMF.
The second edition of our digital LiDAR Magazine is in the final production stages. If you have an interesting story that you want to promote in this new format please let me know as I am booking material for our November issue.
The featured video in this issue comes from a 10 year old German company Metaio that is a leader in the field of augmented reality?AR. If you have not paid attention to this technology, have a look at this video and I am sure the wheels will start turning on how laser scanning can be combined with AR.
The Spotlight this time goes to Michael Gerlek for his detailed explanation of open source licensing. As he notes this is not specific to LiDAR, but with the increased interest in open source software it is very timely. Michael Olsen lightens things up with a rap song about laser scanning?as he says, you have to stretch yourself sometimes. Michael Raphael reports on a very exciting new handheld video imaging product that has breakthrough potential. John Russo wraps it up for this edition with a clear presentation of the value that laser scanning brings to a building renovation project.
The Resource Directory listings are expanding. Take a few minutes to list your firm in our Resource Directory, and don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
Please let me know how we can be of service to you, and also please encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter here.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

Understanding Open Source Licensing
(Let's) talk about what an open source license actually is, and what rights the BSD license gives you. This article doesn?t actually have anything to do with lidar, I admit ? but companies that use or develop open source software need to understand what these licensing terms are and how they are applied, so this article can be considered a prerequisite to some of the topics we?ll be covering in the future. Let?s start by defining the legal term ?copyright" ...

New Articles from the LiDAR News team...
Olsen
LiDAR in Da Hood : Mike Olsen ? One of the things that I have learned in various teaching training workshops is to stretch yourself to do things that are out of your normal repertoire. So I thought I would share a LiDAR rap song I have been tinkering with (Someday, I might actually perform it!) While giving a lecture on laser scanning, I caught myself off guard by the rhyming as ...
Michael Raphael
Facility Scanning with the New F5 Handheld: Michael Raphael ? In the world of industrial facilities construction, effective space planning in the installation phase can prevent major time and cost overruns. The new class of building CAD software called BIM, or Building Information Management, helps before the construction phase to prevent occurrences of clash and other space ...
John Russo
Scanning and Modeling Complex Building Systems for Renovation Work : John Russo ? Historically, complex building systems such as structural, mechanical, plumbing and electrical have been very difficult to document with any degree of dimensional accuracy. This is never more evident than when it comes to building renovation. Owners, architects, engineers and ...

Topcon's IP- S2 Mobile Mapping System overcomes the challenges of mapping 3D features at a high level of accuracy. Accurate vehicle positions are obtained using three technologies: a dual frequency GNSS receiver establishes a geospatial position; an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides vehicle attitude; and connection to the vehicle CAN bus or external wheel encoders obtains odometry information.
