intro
Welcome to the November issue of LiDAR News. I hope you all received the 2nd edition of our digital LiDAR Magazine. This is the only publication dedicated to the LiDAR and laser scanning industry. There are a number of interesting articles, ranging from the Army's BuckEye LiDAR data collection system to the use of LiDAR in protecting coastal zones. If you haven't already, click the magazine cover below or visit our site for individual articles.
I heard from a number of people that the GEOINT conference was very active, with more than 4,000 attendees and a lot of LiDAR technology on display. Next on the conference calendar is SPAR Europe, November 7 - 9 in The Hague, Netherlands; followed by ELMF in Salzburg, Austria November 29 and 30.
Vol1No2
Our feature video this week comes from Spheron. It's not laser scanning, but if visual documentation is the application, it is impressive technology. The company's photogrammetric camera is able to automatically capture 360º spherical HDR imagery in a single scan operation.
The Spotlight in this issue goes to guest author Greg Richards. It was murder, not suicide, which caused the death of former world featherweight and junior welterweight boxing champion Arturo Gatti. In order to fully understand the circumstances of Gatti?s death, the investigators needed to document and virtually recreate his hotel room.
Richard Rybka brings us yet another use for mobile mapping?flood elevation certificates: a group in Australia did an entire town. Michael Gerlek discusses data collection and storage. Wrapping up, we have a new contributing author, Elizabeth Lee from CyArk. Liz explains how virtual access to cultural heritage is starting to be adopted within this community. We look forward to Liz' contributions on digital heritage.
The Resource Directory listings are expanding. Take a few minutes to list your firm in our Resource Directory, and don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
Please let me know how we can be of service to you, and also please encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter here.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

Using the FARO Focus3D Laser Scanner
It was murder, not suicide, which caused the death of former world featherweight and junior welterweight boxing champion Arturo Gatti according to a team of forensic investigators. On July 11, 2009, Gatti was found dead on the floor of his condo in the Brazilian resort town of Porto de Galinas. He had been vacationing there with his wife, Amanda, and young son, when he was discovered lying face-down near a staircase on the first floor of the hotel room ...

Mobile Mapping in Flood Prone Areas: Richard Rybka ? Determining the floor levels of existing and re- built structures in flood prone areas is an ongoing and constant critical need. Both occupancy permits and insurance rates depend on an accurate certification of the first floor level of each structure in these zones. In 2006, just five short years ago, I visited a prominent survey ...
Gerlek
LiDAR and Data Compression: Michael Gerlek ? Have you thought about how much LiDAR data you are going to collect next year? Yes, I know, the cost of hard drive storage keeps going down and down ? but the amount of data you collect keeps going up and up. Point cloud densities are increasing, and the number of fields stored for each point are increasing, too (RGB anyone ...
Lee
Virtual Access to Cultural Heritage: Elizabeth Lee ? Next month, CyArk founder Ben Kacyra will keynote the UNESCO conference entitled Remote Access to Cultural Heritage. We thought the topic of virtual access to cultural heritage sites would be an interesting contribution to LiDAR News. While this topic is still an emerging subject within the cultural heritage field, the ...
