Meet the Authors /
Welcome to the mid-November issue of LiDAR News. I think it may be our best content to
date. Adoption of the ASTM E57 data exchange standard took a major step forward with the recent
announcement by Leica Geosystems that Cyclone can now read and write E57
files. I think it is fair to say that this effort has reached critical mass, but don't forget to
keep reminding the vendors that you want to see them support this standard.
The featured video in this issue comes from Ben Kacyra, the inventor of the tripod laser
scanner. He is making a presentation at TED on the work he is doing with CyArk (see article
below) to scan cultural heritage sites around the world.
The Spotlight in this issue goes to Stephen Clancy for his article on fusing aerial and mobile
LiDAR. This is the best article on this subject that I have read.
Justin Barton a co-worker of contributing author Liz Lee reports on CyArk's most recent project -
scanning an incredibly ornate stepwell in India. ?This is a Scottish Ten project, which will be
deposited with CyArk. It is wholly funded by the Scottish Government, delivered by Historic
Scotland and the Glasgow School of Art. One of Michael Olsen's grad students, Abby Chin reports
on a project that combined airborne LiDAR data with tripod-mounted scanning.
Lewis Graham provides the 3rd article in his series on LiDAR best practices. This is how QA/QC
is managed and measured in the office - really valuable insight from an industry expert. And
wrapping it up we have Joe Croser providing the inside scoop on last week's big news item - the
acquisition of Pointools by Bentley Systems.

The integration of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) captured data from aerial, mobile
and/or terrestrial platforms, plus traditional survey techniques, has exposed new vistas in data
processing and product generation for the 2D, 3D, and 4D environment. In particular, the fusing
of aerial LiDAR and mobile terrestrial LiDAR datasets has afforded anopportunity to leverage
similar technologies captured from differing vantage points, to ...

The Digital Preservation of
Rani Ki Vav in India: Justin Barton ? Located in northeastern India, in the
city of Patan in the state of Gujarat, is a traditional stepwell carved deep into the ground.
The well is decorated with over 400 intricately carved niches. Rani Ki Vav, which translates as
?The Queen?s Stepwell?, was built by Udaymati, Queen consort to Bhimdev I of ...
LIDAR Best Practices: Part
III ? Initial Office Processing: Lewis Graham ? In the previous installment,
we examined the field operations associated with planning and acquiring a LIDAR (and possibly
imagery) mission. We place great emphasis on step by step quality checks and the importance of
developing and rigorously following written procedures. W. Edwards Demming, the ...
