Meet the Authors /
Welcome to the first issue of LiDAR News for 2012 and Happy New Year! I hope everyone had
a chance to unplug, enjoy time with your families and that you are looking forward to an exciting
new year in 3D laser scanning and LiDAR. My prediction is that 2012 is going to surprise to the
upside, at least economically and hopefully, politically. Can you imagine what it would be like
to have a functional Federal government?
As a way of thanking the LiDAR News contributing authors for all their hard work in 2011 we
decided to keep the effort for this issue to a minimum by not asking for a new article during the
holidays. Instead we are going to recycle a few of the more interesting stories from the past
year. While we are on this subject if any of you have an interest in becoming a contributing
author please let me know. It is a good vehicle for getting your name in front of thousands of
highly qualified readers every month.
There is BIG news to report concerning the next issue of LiDAR Magazine. After just 2 online
issues we have decided to publish our next issue in print as well as digitally. Our plan is
distribute the first print issue at ILMF
in Denver, Colorado January 23 - 25. Hope to see many of you there as we kick off
the conference schedule for 2012.
Intro to LiDAR, created by a team at Idaho University, is the Featured Video in this issue. The
Spotlight article goes to Richard Rybka for his interviews of Autodesk and Bentley Systems
concerning mobile LiDAR. These 2 software giants are going to have a lot to say about the
integration of 3D point clouds and model-based design, particularly with their recent
acquisitions of Alice Labs and Pointools, respectively.
I want to also highlight the excellent series of articles prepared by Lewis Graham on LiDAR best
practices. And to wrap up this issue we have the 3 Michaels - Gerlek, Olsen and Raphael
discussing open source software licensing, georeferencing point clouds and the Wright Brothers.
The Resource Directory listings are expanding. Take a few minutes to list your firm
in our Resource Directory, and don't forget to send us your white papers
and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
Please let me know how we can be of service to you, and also please encourage your colleagues to

Autodesk and Bentley Systems Talk
About Mobile LiDAR
Software is the key to a complete solution for the end-user-- there is no question about it.
Hardware manufacturers continue to build advanced mobile mapping systems--like Topcon's new HD
Mapper system that collects 1.3 million LiDAR points per second. But when it comes down to the
applications, software is essential to transforming massive datasets into bottom-line
deliverables for the customer. Autodesk and Bentley Systems are two of ...

LIDAR Best Practices: Part
III ? Initial Office Processing: Lewis Graham ? In the previous installment,
we examined the field operations associated with planning and acquiring a LIDAR (and possibly
imagery) mission. We place great emphasis on step by step quality checks and the importance of
developing and rigorously following written procedures. W. Edwards Demming, the father ...
Understanding Open Source
Licensing: Michael Gerlek ? Last time, in episode #2, we looked at libLAS, a
library for processing LAS data, and we mentioned that it is available under the ?BSD open source
license?. This time, we?ll talk about what an open source license actually is, and what rights
the BSD license gives you. This article doesn?t actually have anything to ...
Putting the Pieces
Together?Laser Scan Geo-Referencing: Michael Olsen ? Greetings and welcome
from the US Northwest! In the last issue, I related some fun experiences while scanning seacliffs
in San Diego. In this article, I would like to discuss some of the challenges we faced while
trying to geo-reference our data and the subsequent development of a freely available ...
Laser Scanner Helps
Recreate the Wright Bros. 1st Flight: Michael Raphael ? As our frequent
readers know, Direct Dimensions utilizes laser scanning in many more interesting ways than just
industrial buildings and facilities. In fact, our roots in scanning start with helping to
develop the FaroArm, a close range metrology tool for reverse engineering and quality control
