Meet the Authors /
I am in the process of slowly returning from an ASCE?American Society of Civil Engineers?day-
long introductory seminar on laser scanning and LiDAR: stuck on the tarmac for 4 hours. There
were about 15 people at the seminar who were just getting interested in the technology. Most
people were involved with surveying in one form or another.
I still believe we are just 2 years into the 3D decade. Those of us who are immersed in the
industry don't realize how little the technology has penetrated into the mainstream. There
certainly is a long runway ahead of us, but as Chris Zmijewski?a new contributing author?points
out, attracting the younger generation to our 3D profession is not going all that well.
If you have an idea for an article please let me know, and encourage your colleagues to sign up

ClearEdge3D has released version 3.0 of its EdgeWise Plant software, which can
automatically model pipes, tanks and other cylinders from point cloud data. The software's
automated feature extraction algorithms, fast-finishing tools and SmartSheet™ intelligent
pipe technology dramatically reduces the time and cost of 3D modeling. Clients report workflow
savings of up to 70% over other pipe modeling software. Visit our site for

I will never forget the day that I was working on a rather prestigious assignment in
Washington DC. It was one of those moments where you suddenly realize where you are, standing in
a location that so very few people have had the privilege to be. You can?t help it, your mind
begins to drift and visualize the past; all of the amazing people and historic decisions and
events that had taken place where I was standing and working. A period ...

Riding the Rails with
Mobile Scanning: Tim Van Gelder ? The North Carolina Railroad Company (NCRR)
built its railroad in the 1850s, with a 200-ft. boundary corridor extending 100 feet on either
side of the rail centerline. Today, the track spans 317 miles and carries 50-60 freight trains
and 10 passenger trains daily. Development has significantly encroached upon the original ...
NVision?s Project Portal to
Streamline Reverse Engineering: Steve Glad ? A major OEM for the aerospace
industry was able to significantly reduce the length of a reverse engineering project by
utilizing a new project portal offered by NVision, Inc., a leading provider of 3D scanning and re-
engineering services. The new portal provided the OEM with full and immediate access ...
Laser Scanning the Envelope
: Ken Smerz - Laser scanning has its obvious uses in the BIM world,
specifically within the mechanical, plumbing and HVAC trades. Anyone currently competing in this
space and not using laser scanning and 3D modeling is missing not only a significant cost saving
tool, but not looking to the future where soon all MEP as-found documentation work will be done
this way ...
