intro
Well, we made it to December. Now, if we don't go off the fiscal cliff, here and in Europe, then I think we are going to have a good year in 2013, although the 13 bothers me a bit. I don't think many of us were around in the last 13 so it's hard to say. Here's a list of the historical events in 1913.
There were a number of important news items, but the one that caught my idea was the ratification of the 16th amendment to the U.S. constitution establishing income tax. I haven't heard about any centennial celebrations being planned.
If you have an interest in the history of 3D CAD for road design, be sure to read the second installment by Randy Tardy - he was there, and I think you will be surprised by the timeline. I recently had dinner with Faraz Ravi, founder of Pointools. His software was used to discover even more about the secrets of Stonehenge.
The European LiDAR Mapping Forum (ELMF) kicks off in Salzburg, Austria today. Our European correspondent, Janhein Loedeman, is taking in the event. Drop us a line if you're on site and would like to meet up. Each attendee will receive a copy of our latest magazine.
Best regards,

3D laser surveying has become an important enabler of efficient plant revamp and upgrade projects. This AVEVA Business Paper describes how plant owner operators and engineering contractors can gain maximum value from this powerful technology, to reduce the cost, risk and downtime of plant modification projects. Readers will gain valuable insight into avoiding common mistakes in the use of laser scanning and ways in which 3D scan data can become a valuable asset for plant lifecycle management.

Out With The New, In With The Old
Several years ago as a new project lead, I was put in charge of a project for an Oregon county in which my team was to create one of the first operational ORMAP geodatabases in the state. It was a time of transition from the older ArcInfo coverage files to the newer, shinier, silver graphic cylinder of the geodatabase. There was a considerable amount of buzz around this new transition and how this would increase the accessibility of GIS data to a ...
