Meet the Authors /
Well, we made it to December. Now, if we don't go off the fiscal cliff, here and in Europe,
then I think we are going to have a good year in 2013, although the 13 bothers me a bit. I don't
think many of us were around in the last 13 so it's hard to say.
Here's a list of the historical
events in 1913.
There were a number of important news
, but the one that caught my idea was the ratification of the 16th amendment
to the U.S. constitution establishing income tax. I haven't heard about any centennial
celebrations being planned.
If you have an interest in the history of 3D CAD for road design, be sure to read the second
installment by Randy Tardy - he was there, and I think you will be surprised by the timeline. I
recently had dinner with Faraz Ravi, founder of Pointools. His software was used to discover even
more about the secrets of Stonehenge.
The European LiDAR Mapping Forum (ELMF
off in Salzburg, Austria today. Our European correspondent, Janhein Loedeman, is taking in the
event. Drop us a line if you're on site and would like to meet up. Each attendee will receive a
copy of our latest magazine.

3D laser surveying has become an important enabler of efficient plant revamp and upgrade
projects. This AVEVA Business Paper describes how plant owner operators and engineering
contractors can gain maximum value from this powerful technology, to reduce the cost, risk and
downtime of plant modification projects. Readers will gain valuable insight into avoiding common
mistakes in the use of laser scanning and ways in which 3D scan data can become a valuable asset
for plant lifecycle management.

Out With The New, In With The
Several years ago as a new project lead, I was put in charge of a project for an Oregon
county in which my team was to create one of the first operational ORMAP geodatabases in the
state. It was a time of transition from the older ArcInfo coverage files to the newer, shinier,
silver graphic cylinder of the geodatabase. There was a considerable amount of buzz around this
new transition and how this would increase the accessibility of GIS data to a ...

Why InRoads is First in 3D
Road Design: Randy Tardy ? In a previous article I explained why
MicroStation dominates State DOT?s. Now we are ready to pose a new set of history revealing
questions. Why has InRoads, originally developed by Intergraph, emerged as the leading, proven 3D
design solution for transportation projects? When was the InRoads 3D decision made ...
Bronze Age Art at the UK?s
Stonehenge World Heritage Site: Marcus Abbott ? In November 2011 English
Heritage commissioned the most detailed laser scan survey of Stonehenge ever undertaken. Each
stone was recorded in unparalleled detail with a point spacing of 0.5mm. This work was carried
out by the Greenhatch Group. The resulting huge data resource of 850GB had ...
Certainty 3D Offers Free
Web Apps for LiDAR Project Planning: Ted Knaak ? Certainty 3D is pleased to
offer the popular LiDAR project planning software, TopoPLANNER and TopoMISSION, as web
applications. This effectively makes these two powerful programs universally available as
opposed to the previous download versions. This document will review these applications ...
