intro
Welcome to the mid-February issue of LiDAR News. Winter continues to be on vacation here in the Northeast, and for most of the US for that matter. That is not the case in Europe where the ice is 5 feet thick on the major rivers. Here in the US it is certainly reducing the heating and snow removal bills, but the lack of snow in the West is going to cause serious water shortage problems this summer.
On the conference front with ILMF 2012 in the record books the attention now turns to the Faro and Riegl user conferences - both inaugural events. LiDAR News will be covering both of these information-packed venues. These smaller, focused events provide important learning and networking opportunities.
It certainly seems like 2012 is off to an impressive start. The stock market is up, the unemployment rate is dropping and I am seeing a number of survey openings being posted. The energy sector is booming as the US moves toward becoming a net exporter and 2 nuclear power plant licenses were granted this week. The natural state of the US economy is prosperity, if we could just get the politicians to understand that.
The Featured Video in this issue comes from Geotop Italy. It was recorded in 2009 but it provides a nice link with Richard Rybka's article on what he sees as the rapid maturing of mobile LiDAR technology. (As an aside, for all of the car nuts in the audience check out this video.)
The Spotlight in this issue goes to Jason Amadori from Earth Eye, who has agreed to become a LiDAR News Contributing Author. Welcome Jason. Building a highway sign inventory database for New York City is a daunting task unless you have the ability to automate the data collection and processing. Jason does.
Stephen Clancy provides a checklist for determining whether Mobile LiDAR is the right tool for the job. And Joe Croser, our resident business consultant wraps up this issue with a must read analysis of the recent decision by Autodesk to withdraw support for a couple of point cloud tools being tested through Autodesk Labs.
We are approaching 250 listings in the Resource Directory. Please take advantage of this opportunity to promote your firm to readers and organizations around the world: list your firm. And don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
It is going to be an exciting year in many respects. Please let us know how LiDAR News can create more value for you, and encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter here. We thank you for ongoing support in building this professional community.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

NYCDOT LiDAR Project
The new MUTCD - Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices regulations require the development of an inventory management program that documents the installation, maintenance and construction characteristics of sign infrastructure. This information was then used to create a sign replacement program designed to prioritize high-risk sign replacements first while optimizing the replacement of other signs in an area to minimize ...

Mobile Mapping Grows Up: Richard Rybka - It's amazing how mobile mapping has matured over the past three years. I recently attended the International LiDAR Mapping Forum 2012 in Denver as a vendor representative for Topcon Positioning Systems. My first experience with ILMF goes back to 2009. Attending this year's conference provided an opportunity to take ...

Identifying the Need for Mobile LiDAR: Stephen Clancy ? In all of my presentations, discussions and travels, I am almost always asked ?what makes a good Mobile LiDAR project?? It is a difficult question to answer quickly and sufficiently. As an experienced Project Manager that has completed the coursework from the Project Management Institute, I know that a ...
Joe Croser
Second Guessing Autodesk: Joe Croser ? I have been rubbing my temples trying to answer the question ?Why?? Why did Autodesk end the technology previews for point cloud feature and shape extraction without ?graduating? the technology for commercial release as they usually do? And as I pondered the question, it all became clear. Commenting on the decision Scott ...
