Meet the Authors /
Welcome to the end of February issue of LiDAR News. As you are reading this I will be in
Orlando, Florida attending the Riegl LiDAR 2012 User Conference. Look for updates on Twitter and on the blog. Last
week's inaugural FARO 3D Documentation
Conference was a big success according Marc Cheves, who represented us and the other
Spatial Media properties.
Faro's CEO declared that they have to be the #1 laser scanner manufacturer based on the
explosion in sales of the Focus 3D. The first time event in North America drew almost 300 people.
Bill Gutelius, guest author (if you are interested in contributing an article please let me know)
discusses the challenge of deciding which laser scanning tradeshows he needs to attend.
I am not going to be able to attend a follow up event in Orlando sponsored by Certainty 3D on
mobile LiDAR, but Ted Knaak has provided an important article on the issues surrounding its
adoption by the DOTs. The organizational issues are just as important if not more so to adoption
of a disruptive technology like mobile laser scanning.
The Featured Video in this issue is actually a series of video interviews that Rich Bremer, a
member of the Spatial Media team recorded at ILMF 2012 with a number of the vendors. See this blog post for a
The Spotlight in this issue goes to Lewis Graham for his compelling argument on the need to
capitalize the "I" in LIDAR - he's convinced me. And finally, we want to welcome Justin Lokitz
from Autodesk as a contributing author. Justin is a Senior Product Manager involved with
geospatial technology such as Autodesk Map 3D. In his first article he presents a strong argument
for the use of photogrammetry to collect 3D data.
We are approaching 250 listings in the Resource Directory. Please take advantage of this
opportunity to promote your firm to readers and organizations around the world: list your firm

well. We want to help you to be noticed.
It is going to be an exciting year in many respects. Please let us know how LiDAR News can

Putting the "I" Back in LIDAR
In the previous installment, we examined the process of initial quality check and geometric
correction of LIDAR data. I am taking a break from the processing series to discuss the value
of the "I" in LIDAR. I (pun intended) am advocating that we always write LIDAR with a capital "I"
as opposed to the popular "LiDAR." Is this really a big deal? Well, I have thought so and this
feeling was confirmed at a visit to land information conference last week in which ...

New Articles from the LiDAR News team...
Dilemma: Bill Gutelius - I have been on both sides of the booth ? sometimes
simultaneously, at tradeshows and conferences. It has been my experience that they consistently
afforded me an opportunity to learn a lot, develop business relationships (?network?) and to
acquire new business ? no matter whether as an attendee or an exhibitor or even as BOTH ...
Two Perspectives on LiDAR
Technology Market Adoption: Ted Knaak ? There is a lot of good news for the
transportation market coming from LiDAR technology these days. Field productivity is going
through the roof! Static scanners with truck mounted tripods have increased productivity from 6
scans per day to over 60. Mobile terrestrial systems are collecting 500,000 ...
Photogrammetry is the New
Point Cloud (and Vice Versa): Justin Lokitz ? It?s quite apparent, and
probably obvious to everyone who reads LiDAR News, that point cloud capture, visualization and
analysis technologies are becoming ubiquitous across every market sector that deals with real-
world objects. Whether you?re a designer of manufactured parts or a civil engineer ...
