intro
Welcome to our mid-March issue of LiDAR News. The Riegl LiDAR 2012 User Conference was a great success as detailed in these blog posts. Next on the circuit is ASPRS 2012 in Sacramento, California March 19 - 23. This conference is unique in that it offers a 3 level platform for industry, government and academia as a professional organization. Hope to see you there.
I am very excited about introducing Stephen Hannon as a new contributing author. Steve is Principal and Founder of Mind the Gap, LLC, where he advises startups and small businesses across the spectrum, from technical feasibility/evaluation to market and competitive analysis and positioning. Welcome to the team. Steve gets the Spotlight for his important insight on LiDAR market disruption. And while we are on the subject Joe Croser adds a few thoughts of his own.
The Featured Video in this issue goes to Vijay Kumar at the University of Pennsylvania for his work with autonomous flying robots - welcome to the future. Managing a transportation agency's sign inventory is a challenging problem that Jason Amadori sheds important light on. Wrapping up this issue is Michael Gerlek, resident open source software guru, and PDAL developer - important work.
We are approaching 250 listings in the Resource Directory. Please take advantage of this opportunity to promote your firm to readers and organizations around the world: list your firm. And don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
It is going to be an exciting year in many respects. Please let us know how LiDAR News can create more value for you, and encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter here. We thank you for ongoing support in building this professional community.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

3D Scanning LiDAR Market Disruption: Alive and Well
As LiDAR zealots, we like to think of LiDAR as an innovative and disruptive technology. Our perspective is that LiDAR disrupts other technologies or the status quo. But what happens when LiDAR itself experiences disruption? That?s exactly what I see taking place with a number of recent developments in 3D scanning LiDAR markets. In this article, I explore how two recent and award-winning innovations represent different types of disruption ...

Joe Croser
Disruption is Good When Innovating: Joe Croser ? For most people ?disruption? is an unwelcome thing. Bad weather disrupts air travel and naughty children disrupt classrooms. But there are some disruptions that are, for the most part, positive and welcome. Thought leaders and academics tend to think of these as disruptive innovations. If you work in the high-tech ...

Sign Retroreflectivity Compliance and Asset Management: Jason Amadori ? Over the past few years, there have been many projects designed to determine an agency?s sign retroreflectivity compliance across their road network. Each project has been unique in terms of how the agency collected the data and how they ultimately managed the data into the future ...
Gerlek
The PDAL Project: Michael Gerlek ? Six months ago in this column, I described libLAS, an open source C++ library that provides classes for reading and writing the various versions and point formats of the LAS standard. At the time, we noted that it wasn?t sufficient for everyone?s needs: it was designed around the LAS format specifically, it didn?t offer a general processing pipeline ...
