Meet the Authors /
There have been a number of important industry announcements over the past two weeks that I want
to be sure you are aware of: First is the announcement by Natural
Resources Canada of a Best Practices Guide for the Use of LiDAR in Forest Inventory Applications.
Having been involved in the development of a set of Guidelines for
the use of mobile LiDAR in transportation, I appreciate how challenging and valuable a document
like this can be.
Next is news
(see video below) from Velodyne and Phoenix Aerial Systems
concerning a successful test flight of a UAV with the Velodyne HDL-32E on board. I think it is
clear that UAVs, or UASs, or AUVs?or whatever you want to call them?are the next BIG technology
to hit the surveying market. AUVSI Unmanned Systems 2013
is August 12 - 15 in Washington, DC.
Finally, I am told by an expert in this field that the patent
that Disney was recently granted for turning
2D photos into 3D models is a very big deal. It uses light ray technology as opposed to
photogrammetry. Enjoy the rest of this edition.

FARO is proud to host the 2nd annual 3D Documentation Conference Oct 16th-18th at the Walt
Disney World Dolphin Resort in Orlando, FL. Building upon the success from last year?s event, the
2013 conference will offer laser scanning professionals a platform to exchange ideas, discuss
emerging technologies and participate in cooperative workshops. Early-Bird registration is now
open. Visit 3Dconference2013.com for more details.

Scripting Power: Unleashing the
Potential of the Point Cloud
At the end of last year, Leica Geosystems announced the ability to perform python scripting
within Cyclone 8.0. Previous versions of Cyclone had limited scripting capabilities for scan
acquisition, which were very helpful to optimize data collection efforts, particularly with older
scanners. Many CAD and GIS packages have had powerful scripting capabilities for a long time;
however, most laser scan software currently does not have this ...

Mobile Mapping System ? Do
it yourself!: Ann-Kathrin Kinscher ? Mobile laser scanning is an essential
part of today?s 3D documentation technologies. It is already widely used in generating 3D city
models, as well as in registration of roadway damage and in the CGI (Computer Generated Images)
sector. Through interaction of an inertial measurement unit, with a GPS system and a ...
