intro
When it comes to the most challenging infrastructure projects in the world, like the London Olympics and now the UK's Crossrail project, the world's leading AEC firms turn to Bentley Systems for their design and construction information systems. I had the pleasure of attending the Year in Infrastructure 2013 Conference which also includes the Be Inspired Awards. There were over 60 projects highlighted?impressive, to say the least.
According to Faraz Ravi, the founder of Pointools, Bentley's support for point clouds is now part of their platform strategy: Rather than producing a number of standalone utilities?such as those they acquired with Pointools?they are focusing on being sure that the Microstation V8 platform is able to handle massive point clouds as well as other 3D data collections. This is similar to the Autodesk reality capture strategy.

Laser Scanning Museum Sculpture for 3-D Research
Three-dimensional scanning technologies have been utilized in industry for over twenty years but are increasingly used in many other fields. One of the exciting, perhaps unanticipated, uses of 3D measurement tools has been their adoption by museums for sculpture conservation, research, and interactive exhibits. 3D scanning is a perfect fit for documenting museum pieces. Museums, for example, typically have pieces that cannot or ...
