intro
Welcome to the end of January 2013 eNewsletter. I would like to call your attention to a great cause that Anna Maria Kotlowska the Marketing and Communications Manager for GeoDigital International has been championing. It's called LiDAR as Art. The idea is to create a LiDAR image, submit it to the contest website and then the public votes. The first place winner receives an iPad and $1,000 for the charity of their choice. Second and third place will receive $500 contributions for their charity.
The voting is now in progress in the LiDAR as Art 2 contest. There are 38 amazing images to choose from. The voting closes on February 5 with the top 3 contestants having their images displayed in the GeoDigital booth at ILMF 2013, so be sure to vote. Anna likes refer to this project as "art with a purpose." Kudos to Anna and her team for giving back like this.
Remember you can choose to receive either a digital or hard copy of LiDAR Magazine on our website. Please encourage your colleagues to sign up for this eNewsletter HERE. We thank you for your ongoing support in building this professional community.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

The USGS National 3D Elevation Program ? 3DEP
In December I predicted that the profession would reflect on 2012 as a year that shaped the geospatial community due to legislation that took major steps in recognizing the significant benefit investment in geospatial data can provide to Federal agencies and the citizens of the Nation. That was a hedged bet with the knowledge of developing and ongoing initiatives, most notably the United States Geological Survey?s (USGS) national three ...

More is More - The Density Factor of Remote Sensing: Paul Tice ? we perceived photogrammetry as a soft science, a dying industry, and felt that its role could easily be replaced by more traditional methods of survey. I couldn't begin to imagine how two photographs put together in a stereo pair could produce xyz data, let alone data that was accurate enough to be used ...
