Meet the Authors /
Welcome. As you're reading this we're gearing up for SPAR 2013 in Colorado
Springs. For those unable to attend look for tweets and blog posts to keep you informed of any
major industry announcements. The registrations are running 25% ahead of last year, so the
industry is certainly still in a high growth mode.
At the top of my "to do list" is to get a demo of Autodesk's recently announced
ReCap. This product has the potential to really open up the 3D AEC market. Ken Smerz, of Precision 3D Scanning (and LiDAR
News contributor) predicts that ReCap will have a similar impact on the market as the Faro Focus
We'll be releasing a new edition of LiDAR Magazine
the show; several other preliminary announcements are below. If you don't receive our print
edition, register HERE
. We appreciate your support in
building this professional community.

The Promise of UAVs
Will unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or ?drones? become a platform for future LIDAR, imagery,
and other geospatial data collection activities? There was initial excitement and anticipation in
the geospatial community when Congress passed and the President signed legislation in February
2012 authorizing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to develop and implement a plan to
provide a ?certificate of authorization? for commercial ...

What Happened to Jim!?
: Ted Mort ? Earlier this year our team was approached with an opportunity
to work with an Arizona contractor who was pursuing a bridge renovation project. We reviewed the
available information and selected our equipment. We use a variety of scanners from several
manufacturers and this gives us the ability to execute each project ...
The Reality: TOF vs Phased
based scanners : Thad Wester ?There are two different types of technology
behind static terrestrial laser scanners. One technology is time of flight (TOF), scanners such
as the Leica C10 or Riegl VZ-400 use this technique. The other is Phase-shift (sometimes referred
to as phased based) - which Leica HDS7000 and the Faro Focus 3D use ...
Solutions (S3): Randy Tardy ? Previously my transportation focus has been
predominately on highway facilities. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) embraced Context
Sensitive Solutions - CSS (CS2) when they published Flexibility in Highway Design 15 years ago.
Today, the FHWA has a robust Context Sensitive Solutions web site. The ...
