intro
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2014. I am going out on a limb by predicting that the pace of innovation and change is going to continue to accelerate in the coming year. It?s difficult for me to keep up and I am focused on it. Many thanks to all of you for your emails pointing out new products and ideas. It really helps. You will see more of these new product announcements in a new section of the LiDAR News Magazine in 2014, plus we are now going to publish eight times instead of six.
In the Spotlight article Tom Kurke updates us on the latest developments with light field cameras, John Russo offers his ideas on what to expect in the coming year and you don't want to miss the first high resolution HD video of earth.
Remember you can choose to receive either a digital or hard copy of the LiDAR Magazine on the website and encourage your colleagues to sign up for this eNewsletter HERE. We thank you for your ongoing support in building this professional community.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

The Great Western Electrification Program will allow faster, quieter travel, with increased seating capacity, and improved reliability on one of the United Kingdom?s oldest and busiest railways. Learn how Bentley Descartes allowed the scalable terrain model to be created 10 times faster than traditional digital terrain models, and how tunnel modeling took 1 to 2 days compared to 1 week with a standard CAD tool.

Light Field Cameras for 3D Capture and Reconstruction
Plenoptic cameras, or light field cameras, use an array of individual lenses (a microlens) to capture 4D light field about a scene. This lens arrangement means that multiple light rays can be associated to each sensor pixel and synthetic cameras (created via software) can then process that information. Phew, that?s a mouthful, right? It?s actually easier to visualize ? Image from Raytrix GmbH Presentation delivered at NVIDIA GTC 2012 ...

New Articles from the LiDAR News team...
John Russo
Crystal Ball Gazing: John Russo ? I?ve heard it said that as we get older the years seem to accelerate. For me, 2013 was no exception. Staring at the start of another New Year I like to contemplate where I?ve been over the past year and what the New Year may bring. In 2013 my business saw a definite increase in the adoption of 3D for both scanning and modeling. With main stream ...
Jason Amadori
Efficient Measurement of Bridge and Overhead Structure Clearance: Jason Amadori ? For most DOTs, knowledge of vertical clearances between the paved roadway surface and vertical structures is an important piece of information that supports the routing of oversized permit vehicles. In addition, horizontal clearances under overhead structures between fixed objects such as ...
Nadia Anis
The Use of 3D Data in Architectural Forensic and Conflict Resolution: Nadia Anis ? As architects involved with forensic work for many years, we have used the same diagnostic tools. These tools have, on many occasions, proven inadequate for the complex issues or even the geometry of today?s architecture. Often times the forensic work is conducted as part of ...
