intro
While attending the recent Bentley Systems Be Inspired Awards and Year in Infrastructure Conference, Chief Operating Officer Malcolm Walter noted that London was becoming the center of the Built Environment universe. With more than 400 sky cranes working in London it would be hard to dispute this, but of greater importance is the sophistication the Brits are bringing to the use of BIM (see the video below) and 3D lifecycle asset management.
The government is making this happen by mandating the use of BIM and requiring that lessons learned on mega-projects be documented and transferred to projects getting started. On the London Crossrail project all constructed facilities must be documented in 3D and submitted to the operations units. If you want to see the future of lifecycle asset management, it's being created in the UK.

The Contour Connection Method using Bare Earth Lidar
A new algorithm for automated landslide inventorying, named the Contour Connection Method (CCM), has been developed that relies on simplified morphological features for analysis. Previous landslide mapping techniques have included field inventorying, photogrammetry, and use of bare- earth (BE) lidar Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) to highlight regions of instability. However, many of these techniques do not have...

"Snoopying" Around Lots ? Part 1: Jeff Fagerman ? Whether we like it or not, technology is dragging us forward. In the surveying community we have had to deal with disruptive technology changes just as often as the rest of society, maybe more. The interesting thing about surveying measurement science is you have to be aware of the complete history or you may ...

Building Rapport With A Prospect? Beware Of The Pitfalls: Jack Vincent ? Building rapport is often a good way to start a first face-to-face meeting with a prospective customer. However, there are pitfalls. As a mindset, one should draw parallels with social media: Think LinkedIn, not Facebook. Conventional sales wisdom says that when calling on a sales prospect for the first time ...

LiDAR and Data Compression: Michael Gerlek ? Have you thought about how much LiDAR data you are going to collect next year? Yes, I know, the cost of hard drive storage keeps going down and down ? but the amount of data you collect keeps going up and up. Point cloud densities are increasing, and the number of fields stored for each point are increasing, too (RGB anyone?) ...
