intro
For those who were not able to attend SPAR 2014 it seemed to me that the news was very positive concerning the LiDAR industry. Most of the people I spoke to were very busy, but these are also some of the most experienced firms in the business. All will tell you that they have paid their dues.
There were 17 new exhibitors on the show floor which certainly indicates a healthy rate of growth on the vendor side. UASs, lower cost scanners from Leica HDS and Surphaser, plus new mobile mapping products including an indoor mapping robot (see video below) from Sanborn were receiving a lot of attention. After just two years in Colorado Springs SPAR has decided to return to Houston, Texas.
If you're available between 1-2pm (EDT) later today, ClearEdge is hosting a webinar on "Structural Modeling with the New EdgeWise Structure: Case Studies of Faster, More Accurate Workflows". Registration is free, HERE. As always, if you have an idea, tip or question, please let me know.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

Think Before You Scan That Building, or interior, or . . .
There is a growing awareness and understanding of the intellectual property considerations in the capture/modify/make ecosystem ? particularly as it relates to content that is captured via a 3D scanner, modified or mashed up, and then manufactured (via 3D printing or otherwise). I have written about this before ? blogging early in 2012 in The Storm Clouds on the Horizon that I felt the next ?Napster? era was upon us for digitally captured ...

LIDAR Best Practices: Part 1 - Acquisition: Lewis Graham ? Before we begin, I must once again remind you that my companies GeoCue Corporation and QCoherent Software provide consulting services and software to the LIDAR industry. In addition, GeoCue is the North American distributor for Terrasolid. This does, of course, introduce some level of bias into my articles. In ...

Lowering the Barriers to Streamline Point Cloud Workflows : Joe Croser ? "If you are not solving a problem you don?t have a business" ? at least that?s the general rule, although exceptions do apply. Perhaps it?s more fair to say, "If someone doesn?t value your offering enough to pay money for it you don?t have a business". That?s why at Pointools we focus entirely on solving user ...
