intro
I hope you have had the opportunity to visit the Learn Mobile LiDAR website which I mentioned in the previous eNewsletter. This is an extremely valuable and free educational resource concerning the use of mobile LiDAR for transportation applications and beyond.
I have to believe that Michael Raphael and his team at Direct Dimensions are doing the most exciting range of 3D projects of any firm that I am aware of. They assisted with development of the video below and supported the recreation of the Liberty Bell highlighted in this LiDAR News blog post. I guess that's what 25 years in 3D will do for you.
Remember, you can choose to receive either a digital or hard copy of the LiDAR Magazine on the website and encourage your colleagues to sign up for this eNewsletter HERE. We thank you for your ongoing support in building this professional community and if you have an idea for an article please let me know.
Best regards,
Gene Roe, LS, PE, PhD

Hull Modeling Using Point Cloud Data from Handheld LIDAR
Capturing 3D point-cloud data of a large, irregular shape is not easy. In the case of a ship?s hull, it can be quite tricky, indeed. Add to that the complex environment of a busy dry- dock, with construction and rigging equipment strewn about , achieving a closed surface mesh by scanning with a terrestrial LIDAR is near impossible, if not at least expensive and time- consuming. The folks at QNTFI Ltd. in New Zealand (a start-up firm focused ...

Growing Support for Digital Coast in Congress: John "JB" Byrd ? Recent reports and articles have focused on sea level rise and how technology can be used to monitor, evaluate and plan for the phenomena. Included in these reports is a focus on a technology known and accepted by the geospatial community, but new to the mainstream media. That technology is LiDAR ...

LIDAR Best Practices: Part II ? Field Analysis: Lewis Graham ? In the initial installment, we examined the initial acquisition segment of an airborne LIDAR project. In this issue, we will move on through field quality checks.
