We are beginning 2015 with a lot of momentum and I am optimistic that 2015 is going to be an even better year for the lidar industry. As Brittany Mabry points out in the Spotlight article, we have an important opportunity to raise awareness of the contributions being made by our industry: 2015 has been proclaimed the International Year of Light by the UN.
With the goal of making a difference, in the New Year I want to encourage everyone to take a moment to think about our 3D profession and to hopefully consider joining an organization such as the USIBD or the ASPRS. Although different in their focus, both need 3D professionals to step up and take on a leadership role.
At the request of a couple of readers we have added an event calendar to the LiDAR News website. We can add your events if you provide us with the details.
As our professional community continues to develop we want to thank you for your interest and support. If you have an idea for an article please let me know. You can choose to receive either a digital or hard copy of the LiDAR News Magazine on the website and please encourage your colleagues to sign up for this eNewsletter HERE.
Best regards,

Picking a Service Partner, Lowest Cost Is Not the Best Measure: Greg Lawes ? Lowest cost is a measure that a Contracting Officer will use to judge the selection of a service partner, such as a laser scanning service provider. But, beware! Cost alone does not tell the whole story and must be factored in with other criteria. Choosing by cost alone may result in a final dollar ...
The Appeal of 3D Mobile Mapping Data: Richard Rybka ? What is the appeal? Why are the deliverables from these mobile mapping systems so much more desirable than what we are accustomed to expect using conventional data collection methodologies? Here are a few of the distinctive advantages: 1. More data - conventional data collection techniques, even with the fastest ...
Mike Tully
Just How Accurate is LiDAR?: Mike Tully ? A client told me the other day that some vendors are promising vertical accuracy of LiDAR deliverables that exceed the LiDAR manufacturer specifications for that system and asked: Is it legitimate for a service provider to promise better accuracy than manufacturer specifications? Or, are service providers overselling their LiDAR services ...
