Our mild winter in New England just turned nasty, with many places receiving more than two feet of snow, with more on the way. One large survey firm in Boston that I spoke to had to furlough crews until we get some relief.
UAS Update: According to this source, on January 30 the FAA has supposedly published its proposed rules for sUAS. It certainly sounds like, at a minimum, you will have to be a licensed pilot to operate a commercial sUAS.
In this issue's Spotlight, Geoff Zeiss reports on the integration of 3D laser scanning, BIM and GIS. As previously noted, the Europeans are leading the charge in this area. Worth mentioning is the fact that when the contractor also assumes the maintenance of the project for an extended period?in this case 20 years?then all of the data is captured from the start and integrated into a lifecycle asset management system. Amazing!
As our professional community continues to develop we want to thank you for your interest and support. If you have an idea for an article please don't hesitate to share. Alternately, if you're planning to attend the ILMF (Denver) or REAL 2015 (San Francisco) later this month and would like to meet up, just drop me a line. We'll have copies of the latest LIDAR Magazine at both events.
Best regards,

Mobile Mapping the Landscape: Richard Rybka ? Of all the potential applications that can be conceived for mobile mapping systems, landscape architecture is likely one of the fields that would be given the least consideration.
