As Michael Raphael explains in the Spotlight article below, REAL 2015 delivered on its promise of providing a new conference experience for the 3D community. The key difference in the format was that the speakers were all invited versus submitting abstracts and being selected by a panel. This resulted in a very high level program that was designed to be much more inclusive of a wide range of reality computing applications.
A presentation at ILMF 2015 by Christoph Strecha, CEO and Co-founder of Pix4D, is also worth noting. In his research of fisheye lenses Christoph found that you can dramatically reduce the number of required photos needed to document a scene in 3D without degrading the resolution?so long as you used a quality lens. He also found that the accuracy of point clouds derived from photos were similar to that of a high quality laser scan. Photogrammetry is not dead.
As our professional community continues to develop we want to thank you for your interest and support. If you have an idea for an article please let me know. You can choose to receive either a digital or hard copy of the LiDAR News Magazine on the website, and please encourage your colleagues to sign up for this eNewsletter HERE.

REAL 2015
Last week Autodesk quite successfully staged the "REAL2015" conference in San Francisco focused on how we are increasingly using 3D to Capture (scan), Compute (design), and Create (fabricate). The event was definitely different in many ways from the more traditional industry conferences many of us regularly attend, such as SPAR, Autodesk University, RAPID, or the Hexagon, FARO, ESRI, and Trimble user events. The line-up of ...
