intro
Welcome! Summer is in full swing and LIDAR companies, like the bees buzzing from flower to flower are busily scurrying around the countryside collecting data and also providing one of life's most valuable service; pollinating the world's infrastructure and resource projects to fruition.

Today, LIDAR data is being collected all over the world by every conceivable means from satellite, plane, helicopter, drone, auto and by foot... This collection of data is just the beginning of a vital process. In fact, LIDAR companies perform an extremely valuable service to society because the collection of LIDAR is always the precursor to a process that provides critical information that will lead to practical solutions in our technologically driven universe. LIDAR provides a critical element to an enormous variety of projects including; small medium and large infrastructure projects, environmental and natural resource management. LIDAR data collection and interpretation is in fact becoming an increasingly large and invaluable part of everyday life for all of society. LIDAR is a dynamic business whose applications are constantly expanding as our technology demands increase.

LIDAR's true value comes to fruition in the form of building, constructing, creating jobs, economic growth, and the protecting our resources and the environment... all this benefit from a little point cloud! So go forth intrepid collectors... you are like bees flitting around the globe pollinating our world!

As I compile our upcoming magazines I'm astounded by the breadth of applications we're coming across. Please don't hesitate to drop me a line if you're workign on something interesting that our readership may like to learn about.

Until next time... Cheers!

The Birth of 3D Mapping Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to take the LIDAR mapping market into hypergrowth. Following Moore's law, with computation capacity doubling every 2 years, it is now possible for point cloud feature extraction to outpace the speed of data generation from laser scanning systems using artificial intelligence. Today, many LIDAR data acquisition systems are capable of collecting terabytes of data on a single trip...

UAS Photogrammetric Point Clouds: A Substitute for LiDAR?: Jarlath O'neil-Dunne - No topic in the remote sensing community was hotter in 2014 than Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and it appears that will also hold true for 2015. Arguably the biggest UAS news over the past few months has been the commercial release of LiDAR systems for UAS, with a number of ...

Christoph Strecha
Mapping Chillon: Comparing Image Reconstruction Accuracy to LiDAR: Strecha & Montgomery - How efficient and accurate is it to map a complex architectural structure using photogrammetric point cloud generation? How would the results of mapping such a structure compare to LiDAR scans? Pix4D, an image-processing software company, assembled a team to address these ...

David Mckittrick
Increasing the Value of a Point Cloud with The Global Mapper LiDAR Module: David Mckittrick - Traditional mapping practices create a representation of the world from a two-dimensional, top-down perspective. The age-old challenge of projecting spatial data onto a two-dimensional plane is a direct consequence of this apparent necessity. Today's geospatial technology increasingly ...
