intro
Welcome! I write from Houston, taking in this year's SPAR 3D Expo and Conference. It's too early to get final attendance numbers but keynotes, plenary and session tracks have been packed and the place is buzzing...there is definitely a palpable excitement running through the industry. Certainly exhibition space sales have benefited enormously by the whole UAV phenomena as the drones have taken over a third to a half of the exhibit space.

To kick off the event, Greg Bentley, CEO, Bentley Systems provided fascinating insight in his opening keynote about new interactive 3D technologies used for the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia. Shortly afterward, I took in the session "Basics of 3D Technologies – Business Drivers for Use of 3D Technologies". The hour culminated in a panel discussion with Matt Craig, LFM Software, Ken Smerz, Eco3d and Greg Dasher of Balfour Beatty Construction. Getting Mr. Dasher’s perspective from a construction company how they justified and benefited from their investment in laser scanning was very illuminating as to what needs to happen for this technology to become accepted by end users. Ken Smerz points out that maybe 10 percent of potential users of this technology are actually exposed to the benefits suggesting that there is a huge education job that needs to happen for this technology to reach its true potential.

Several major product announcements today from the likes of Riegl, Bentley, Leica, Orbit and Arithmetica just to name a few. More to come. If you're here at the show, drop me a line!

Documenting Historic Naval Architecture with 3D Laser Scanning: Michael Raphael - The mission of documenting historic sites and structures with laser scanning often includes artifacts of naval history such as historic wooden ships. Given the amazing human effort to design and build these vessels back in the day, without computers and CAD software, these vestiges of engineering ...

Topographical Surveys for BIM-What You Need to Know: Steve Bury - I spoke recently at the Digital Construction Week Show in London on the subject of Topographical Surveys...As-Built BIM for Outside. Okay, not the snappiest of titles but at least most of the audience seemed to stay awake during my delivery! I thought it might be a good idea to share some of the points ...

Artemis Valanis
Real Orthophotos: Artemis Valanis - An orthophoto is by definition a geometrically corrected image of uniform scale, resolution and quality. An orthophoto, may be created from a single or multiple photographs (hundreds or even thousands) which are processed using photogrammetric methods in order to produce an orthogonal projection view of a site (like a map) or a ...

Random Points: Just a Little Bit Tighter, now Baby: Lewis Graham - I was recently engaged in a very interesting conversation with a company who is performing a number of survey related operations for mine site management. This conversation led me to think, once again, about the overall issues of accuracy. The end purpose of this month's column is to implore the ...

The Business of Laser Scanning: Cash Strapped?: Ken Smerz -Cash is King! No kidding, but when I can't get my clients to pay for the jobs we deliver in a timely manner, that's a significant issue for expenses... and little things like payroll. We actually have a chart we use to forecast accounts receivable versus costs, with intersecting lines that project when we are expecting to ...

Geiger-mode LiDAR is an emerging commercial technology that enables the collection of data at higher resolutions and from higher elevations than traditional linear-mode LiDAR. To date, Geiger-mode LiDAR has been used only in the government domain. Over the past 15 years, Harris has become the only large-volume processor of Geiger-mode LiDAR. Our experience includes the full life cycle of Geiger-mode LiDAR data collection, processing, and dissemination.
