intro
Welcome! I have long been fascinated by the process, or cycle, of scanning a physical object, creating an accurate digital as-built and then coming full circle from physical object to digital 3D model and back again to creating a physical model made possible by the proliferation of 3D printers and rapid-prototype technology.

The tradition of building scale-models of geographic terrain and facilities dates to the 1520's when the Grand Duke of the Knights Templar commissioned a model of the city of Rhodes in preparation for the Turkish siege. In the 16th century, Italian engineers would present France's Charles IX with relief maps and scale-models at each step of building a fortress. The idea of building and construction documentation was born. The finest historical examples of 3D physical models of terrain and infrastructure can be found at the Musee des Plans-Reliefs housed, appropriately, in the Army Museum at the Invalids tomb of Napoleon I in Paris, France. For more, see my editorial below.

Physical Scale-Models - Real 3D As-built Data You Can Touch: Roland Mangold - The tremendous need for reality capture foretells great potential opportunity for LiDAR and laser scanning. The vast amounts of data being collected by LiDAR, laser scanning, photogrammetry and the ability to process all this data into something useful is the key. I find the convergence of reality capture ...

State of the LiDAR Profession, Sensors, Collection, and Calibration : Jamie Young - In FY 2007, the FAA issued three Advisory Circulars to provide guidance for the collection and submission of aeronautical data and to identify the FAA's GIS data model for airport-related data. The main goal of the Advisory Circulars was to develop satellite-based approach procedures and to better utilize and ...

David F. Maune
FEMA's Romance with LiDAR: David F. Maune - In 1994, Brigadier General Gerald E. Galloway chaired the Interagency Floodplain Management Review Committee following the devastating floods of 1993. His report, widely known as the Galloway Report, recommended that FEMA evaluate newer technologies that could yield improved digital elevation models (DEMs) for floodplain ...

Christian Stallings
Exploring UAS Effectiveness for Landfill Surveys: A Case Study: Christian Stallings - Can the rapidly advancing technology of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), a.k.a. "drones," be effective in collecting data on the nearly 2,000 landfill facilities in the U.S. In February 2016, McKim & Creed, Inc., a national engineering, geomatics and planning firm, teamed with landfill engineers ...

Geiger-mode LiDAR is an emerging commercial technology that enables the collection of data at higher resolutions and from higher elevations than traditional linear-mode LiDAR. To date, Geiger-mode LiDAR has been used only in the government domain. Over the past 15 years, Harris has become the only large-volume processor of Geiger-mode LiDAR. Our experience includes the full life cycle of Geiger-mode LiDAR data collection, processing, and dissemination.
