intro
Welcome! It's been a couple weeks since SPAR 3D and I am still following up... This year's event was outstanding. The big take-away for me is that the construction industry is virtually at full employment and the bottom line is that any infrastructure investment will seriously tax labor resources of most construction and engineering firms. The only solution is technology which has been sorely lacking in the construction industry. 3D tech, BIM, VDC and drones will play a major role in addressing our failing infrastructure and lack of trained personnel.

In the mean-time, LIDAR Magazine will continually work to inform, inspire and educate. We have a great issue in store for you, scroll down for more...

Until Next time, Cheers!

Kevin Corbley
16 Tips to Enhance the Speed and Quality of Your Project: Kevin Corbley - Industrial plants may be the most challenging spaces for 3D scanning and modeling service providers to work. Not only are the spaghetti-like pipe runs and sagging conduits difficult to document precisely, the crowded and sometimes hazardous spaces in which they are located can test ....

Larry Trojak
British Columbia Engineering Firm - a Whole New Level: Larry Trojak - When you are an engineering firm located in a relatively small-town in British Columbia--nearly 500 km from the closest major metropolitan area--the odds are somewhat stacked against you. To compete and thrive, you have to choose your work wisely, you have to plan on doing more than your share ...

Chuck Knox
Using LiDAR as an Oil and Natural Gas Exploration Tool: Chuck Knox - Does the upward propagation of faults, fractures and sub surface features create an expression on the surface of the earth? Faults, fractures and sub surface features buried in many cases thousands of feet below the surface of the earth are very important to the petroleum geologist. Faulting can create ...

Jeff Cozart
The Effectiveness of Drone-Based LiDAR: Jeff Cozart - Aerial LiDAR surveys have become a mainstay on most worksites in mining, oil & gas, and heavy construction. LiDAR is making improvements in terrain mapping and growing in popularity for hydrology, geomorphology, site planning, landscape ecology, and volumetric calculations. By producing highly accurate elevation data ...

Lewis Graham
Random Points: Root Cause Analysis: Lewis Graham - I recently attended a transportation conference and sat in on a talk given by some GIS graduate students. The subject of the talk was generating predictive driving data based on real time inputs from GNSS-equipped cargo trucks. The idea was to improve transport efficiency over the monitored segment (about 40 km) by ...

Ken Smerz
The Business of Laser Scanning: The Right Target for Growth: Ken Smerz - The 3d imaging world, as new as it is, has many companies in search of the right target audience to fund growth--and ideally, to provide recurring revenue. Do you really know what types of businesses can best fuel your growth? Who your ideal target client is? And who should you avoid altogether? I'm going ...
